In 2007, I was looking for an ultra-thin wallet for my walking and bike riding lifestyle - one that wouldn't make my shorts fall down my legs when I was out doing urban errands.
I couldn't find what I wanted, so I sewed one myself out of yellow nylon ripstop fabric.
I discovered that by making a basic wallet of nylon instead of leather, it would save 75% of the space in my pocket or bike bag.
The cards gave it the needed structure instead of heavy leather or bulky fabrics. It was a very simple idea, but it worked great.

When I went shopping, people frequently asked me where I got it. So many people asked me that in December 2007, I asked the owner of a small camping store where I lived (Moscow, Idaho - home of U of I) if he'd try selling them for me. He agreed.
My kids helped me make some hang tags and a little pretend credit card and drivers license to show people how it worked. I found a local sewing expert to make a few dozen. To my pleasant surprise, they started selling the first day.

Fast forward a bit. I came up with a package that would allow the wallet to be sold at a big retailer. In 2012, we landed our first purchase order from REI, the big outdoor gear retailer with over 100 stores.

Along the way, we've had one major design challenge to growing the company. A small but persistent number of customers complained that their cards would fall out of the pockets.
While hard core users have been willing to just accept this flaw or put a rubber band on their wallet, I never felt this was a satisfactory solution, and have been hesitant to raise outside funds to ramp up marketing until this was handled.
Recenlty, the best solution came to me from an entrepreneur I met last summer. We're going to add a small vertical elastic band, like the kind used on personal journals and other similar products.
We'll use an elastic band like this to secure the wallet and keep cards from falling out
Here's my "artist's" rendering with a red band done on the plane to Cambodia.
And here's the back side. The elastic strap will be anchored to the back of the wallet, just like it is with the book example. See how it is a loop when not keeping the wallet closed?
I am spending December and January in Asia so I can sit down with our manufacturing company, work through all the design concepts face to face, and come back with our first shipment of Butterfly Wallet Version 2.0 in the hopper!
Over the years, many other features have been suggested by our loyal customers. Along with the security band, I want to include as many of these design upgrades as possible at the same price. The more Version 2.0 wallets we pre-sell now, the more of these features we'll be able to add:
